ASSIGNMENT 1: BOWL

Material:
Aluminium sheet
Bowl template
Radius gauge

Tools:
Mallet
Stump
English Wheel

Step 1:
Use a black marker to draw the bowl template on the square Aluminium sheet. Then use hand lever shear to cut out the external circle. Tin snips can also be used to cut out the circle.

Step 2:
Put the Aluminium sheet on a stump or a sandbag and use a mallet to strike it repeatedly along the circle line. Remember to wear ear mask while striking the metal sheet. Moreover, do not strike it too hard. Otherwise, buckling will appear on the bowl. Keep striking the Aluminium sheet until it becomes a roughly bowl shape. Also, keep checking the bowl curvature with the radius gauge. At this time, I have used the radius 275.

Step 3:
After creating a roughly bowl shape, English wheel can be used to smooth the surface. There have different types of radius wheels in the machine. I have used the radius 275 wheel to match my bowl curvature at this time. Then, put the bowl rolling through the English wheel from different directions. Finally, use the radius gauge to measure the bowl curvature.
